Lori Kolbenschlag. 1st place, Open

Graduate students Lori Kolbenschlag and Starr Petronella were selected as winners at the 2011 PPA Summer Shootout from among over 3000 contestants from all over the world.
Lori received the 1st. place in the Open category and Starr got 2nd. place in Portraiture.

The 2011 Atlanta Photojournalism Seminar will be held Dec. 2-3 at the Westin Atlanta Perimeter North, 7 Concourse Parkway, Atlanta, GA.

The Seminar was founded in 1973 by a group of photojournalists representing newspapers, magazines and wire services, seeking to promote the highest standards of photojournalism through an annual educational conference and a photography contest judged by working photographers.

Among the 16 different categories to enter are Spot News, Feature, Sports Action, Portrait, Product Illustration, and Multimedia Slideshows. Each participant may submit up to 15 entries plus a portfolio. A picture story or multimedia entry counts as one entry. No more than 3 multimedia entries per person are permitted.

- Deadline: Entries must be received by 6 p.m., Friday, November 25, 2011.
- Entry Fee: US $45 per photographer or multimedia team.
- Eligibility: You do not have to attend the Seminar to enter. Photos must have been taken between November 8, 2010 and November 7, 2011 (see contest rules for picture story exceptions).

The print-on-demand revolution has opened up new publishing possibilities for photographers; it has never been easier or more affordable to produce and market a book of your photographs. In a self-publishing scenario you can create exactly the book you envision, but without the input and expertise of seasoned professionals at a publishing house. Which scenario is best for you?

In this illustrated presentation, creative consultant, author, and educator Mary Virginia Swanson will discuss both avenues to publishing and help participants determine the pros/cons of each, sharing resources from her recent title with coauthor Darius Himes, Publish Your Photography Book (Princeton Architectural Press, Spring 2011).

Special guest photographer Laura Noel and publisher Bill Boling of Fall Line Press will discuss their journey together in publishing “Free Fall”. Time will be allocated for Q&A with Swanson, Noel and Boling following their presentations.
